As part two of our preliminary examinations, we were asked wether or not we would condemn Mideo Cruz, his artwork the Poleteismo and the CCP officials for housing his artwork in view of the public eye.

Its moments like this when I find that maybe I do belong in UP Diliman. Honest to goodness, I don’t feel that we should condemn any of the three. One key factor in life is knowing the value of respect. Amidst the very outrageous pictures portrayed in Mideo’s obra maestra, we shouldn’t automatically deem him as evil or blasphemous and all the other words we could possibly label on him. Art is basically a form of expression through which one has the freedom to exhibit his/her visions and perspectives in life. I find Mideo’s creation kind of rational in the most obvious context.

 Time has basically changed a lot in a very rapid pace. Youth today are a far cry from the youth of years forgotten. We’re no longer conservative much less innocent. In many ways, Mideo was making that clear through his artworks. With all the symbolisms present, I found the interpretation to be, so to speak, portraying what is actually being worshiped in present times. Things lie sex, vices and other extreme lifestyles have become very much evident in our society today. It was basically not something for us to be outraged about. Maybe the only reason everyone was so sensitive to the issue, was because he put all these symbolisms next to the face of Jesus who represents all that is good. But as I see it, it was trying to say how amidst all these extreme occurrences in present times, Jesus is always there now matter what.

Therefor if we just tried to look passed all that was wrong, we’d actually find something so good. We need to stop being so literal n context and find what is invisible to the naked eye. In line with that, we must also keep an open mind and respect each others’ preference of expression and beliefs.

So much for rain or shine, the walk will push through. For the Thomasian Freshmen, this week was highly anticipated due to the ever traditional Welcome Walk. It’s sort of a right of passage wherein the freshmen are brought though the arch and all. Despite the heavy rain pour, we were told that the walk would still commence so it was best that we brought umbrellas. After our first quiz in CWG, we were dismissed and told we should go eat. Carrell treated us to a bucket of chicken at KFC as a post-birthday celebration. :-bd I also saw so many high school friends yesterdaaay. :”> So happy I got to see Suy, Den and No. Hee. I love you people! Anyway.. Exactly after eating, an announcement was made how the walk along with the mass and concert was postponed until further notice. The whole university was in a total frenzy and it was a real struggle to get out. But of course, we all headed home once the announcement was made. (Had no plans of sticking around long enough to be stranded)

Upon arriving home, I got settled in all warm and cozy under the covers. All of a sudden, my phone was being bombarded with calls from Kat/Van persisting that I go to Katip. No matter how hard I tried to refuse, they kept insisting. So I just told Kat to let them know I wouldn’t be arriving but I really would. ;;-) Technically, everyone knew except Van. Hehe. =)) I got there a little past 9 pm and some of them were a little bit on a high already, although most of them were relatively okay. After a few drinks and games to beat (not to mention some unfortunate occurrences HAHA), time eventually flew and it was time for us to leave. Left around 11:45 or so and got home a little past 12 am. All in all, it was a good time. :-)

It’s kind of ironic how we were out having this “good time” while others were stranded along Taft and Espana. :-s Hopefully the weather starts to clear up already ‘cause it’s starting to make me worry. Har.
